Blue Jay Softball Splits With Eureka

The Westminster softball team split with Eureka in Saturday's conference doubleheader. The Westminster Blue Jays shut out the Eureka Red Devils in game one, 6-0, but lost game two, 5-0. The Blue Jays are now 4-9 on the season and 3-1 in conference play. 

Game One

The Blue Jays got on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a RBI single up the middle by sophomore Alyssa Johnson to score sophomore Kelsi Hill.

Sophomore Bree Peterson led-off the third inning with a homerun over the center field fence to take the 2-0 lead, and in the fifth inning, the Blue Jays scored four more runs. Sophomore Brittany Hodge was brought in by Hill's RBI single, and freshman Kim Morrison hit a two RBI double to right center to bring in Hill and Peterson. Morrison scored the final run on sophomore Alyssa Johnson's RBI ground out to shortstop. 

The Blue Jays held the Red Devils to just one hit in the sixth and seventh inning, ending the game with a 6-0 shutout. 

Sophomore pitcher Alyson Hahn (3-4) grabbed the shutout win on the mound. She pitched the complete game and struck out five. 

The Blue Jays outhit the Red Devils 8-4. Hill and Morrison led the offense with two hits each.

Game Two

Eureka jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the second game. They added three more runs off four hits in the second inning to take the 5-0 lead. 

The Blue Jays allowed just two hits throughout the remaining five innings, while they grabbed four hits, but they were unable to find home plate. The Blue Jays ended the game with a 5-0 loss. 

Freshman pitcher Amber Tepen (1-2) suffered the loss on the mound. She pitched the 1.1 innings and allowed three earned runs. Hahn came in as relief and pitched the remaining 5.2 innings. She struck out five and allowed one run. 

Hill finished the game with two hits.

 

The Blue Jays travel to Cornell College on Sunday, March 29 to play a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m.
