Blue Jays Swept By Cornell

The Westminster softball team was swept by the Cornell College Rams on Sunday, March 29. The Westminster Blue Jays were short-gamed in game one, 19-0. In game two, they fell 10-2. With the two losses, the Blue Jays move to 4-11 on the season.

Game One

The Rams started game one with six runs in the first inning, and added seven more in the second inning. They combined for six more runs in the third and fourth innings to win the game 19-0 in five innings.

Freshman Amber Tepen (1-2) started at the mound and suffered the loss. She pitched 2.1 innings and struck out one. Freshman Abby Bartley came in as relief and pitched the remaining 1.2 innings. 

Sophomore Brittany Hodge had a double while sophomores Anne Baker and Alyson Hahn each had a single. 

Game Two

Sophomore Kelsi Hill led-off the second game with a double to center field and later scored on sophomore Alyssa Johnson's single to center field to take an early 1-0 lead. Cornell quickly grabbed the lead in the bottom of the first with two runs and added two more in the second inning.

With two outs in the top of the third inning, Tepen doubled down the right field line. She advanced to third on a wild pitch and was brought home on Johnson's RBI single to shortstop to bring the game to 4-2, Cornell.

The Rams combined for five runs in the third and four innings to take a 9-2 lead heading into the fifth inning.

The Blue Jays grabbed two hits in the fifth, but were unable to find home plate. The Rams thenhit a RBI double in the bottom of the fifth to score the final run needed to short-game the Blue Jays.

Freshman Kat Cooper pitched the first 3.1 innings of the game and suffered the loss on the mound; Bartley pitched the remaining 1.1 innings.

Tepen and Johnson led the Blue Jay offense with two hits each. 

 

The Blue Jays host Illinois College on Tuesday, March 31, for a doubleheader starting at 5:00 p.m.
