Blue Jays Drop Saturday Doubleheader After Two Close Games Against Pioneers

Lexington, KY 3/4/2023- The Westminster College baseball team traveled to Lexington, Kentucky, for a three-game series against the Transylvania University Pioneers. They started the series with a doubleheader on Saturday. The Pioneers would take an early 2-0 lead in game one, the Blue Jays would tie up in the top of the ninth inning. The Pioneers would win it 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth. In game 2, the Blue Jays got up to a 2-0 lead with Transylvania tying it in the bottom of the second inning. Both offenses would be red hot with the team's scoring runs and would need extra innings to decide a winner. The Blue Jays would take an 11-10 lead in the top of the twelfth inning. The Pioneers would tie it at 11-11 and then win the game on a walk-off wild pitch, 12-11.

Game One: Box Score

Bode Gebbink (St, Joseph, Il. / St. Joeseph-Ogden) started game one for the Blue Jays. He would go six full innings, striking out four batters and walking four. He would give up four hits and two runs. Transylvania would strike first in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. They would score again at the bottom of the fourth to extend the lead to 2-0. The Blue Jays would tie the game in the top of the ninth after Spencer Kaiser (Old Monroe, Mo / Winfield) hit a triple to left field and scored Skyler Bushey (Saint Albans, Vt / Bellows Free Academy) who reached on a single. Austin Mayton (Wentzville, Mo. / Fort Zumwalt North) would single to left and score Keiser to tie the game 2-2. In the bottom of the inning, the Blue Jays would walk a batter to put a man on first. The Pioneers would steal second base. Their next batter would hit a walk-off double to left to win the game 3-2.

 

Game Two: Box Score

Trent Morrow (Russellville, Mo. / Russellville) got the start on the mound in game two. He would go four innings and two-thirds. The Blue Jays took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. The Pioneers would tie it in the bottom of the inning. The Blue Jays would score two more runs in the top of the third. Transylvania would regain the lead after scoring three runs in the bottom of the third. They would score three more in the bottom of the fourth to take an 8-5 lead. Westminster would score one run in the top of the fifth. The Pioneers would score two runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 10-5. The Blue Jays would score five runs in the top of the eighth to tie 10-10 and would force extra innings. Westminster scored a run in the top of the twelfth to take an 11-10 lead. Transylvania would tie the game and win it 12-11 in the bottom of the twelfth.
