Fulton, Mo 4/23/2023- The Westminster Blue Jays Baseball team faced the Spalding Golden Eagles in a Sunday match-up. The Blue Jays would win the game 5-2 to win the series. They would improve their conference record to 8-7.
The Blue Jays started Freshman Derek Archer (St. Charles, Mo / Francis Howell North) on the mound. Archer went 7.2 innings, facing 30 batters only giving up 6 hits and striking out 4 of them. Archer would improve his record to 3-3 and keep his ERA to 3.63. Nathan Shepard (Warrenton, Mo/ Warrenton) and Kaleb Hinkle-Pruett ( Barnhart, Mo/ Seckman) came in to finish off the Golden Eagles. Shepard would pitch 1 inning facing 6 batters giving up 2 hits.
Matt Lukins(Clark, Mo / Rock Bridge), Skyler Bushey (Saint Albans, Vt / Bellows Free Academy), and Trent Rueckert (Kansas City, Mo/ Platte County) got the offense going for the Blue Jays. Lukins in the fifth inning got the scoring going by getting an infield single to score Coltin Green. Lukins ended the game going 1-2 with a walk. Rueckert got the call in the 7th inning with bases loaded to Pinch hit for Troy Romero ( Trophy Club, TX / Bryon Nelson). Rueckert would go on and hit a single to left center, scoring Austin Mayton (Wentzville, Mo / Fort Zumwalt North), Lukins, and Steven Diaz ( Highland, Il/ Highland). While advancing on throws made by the defense. Bushey two batters later scored Rueckert off third to give some insurance runs for the Blue Jays. Bushey ended the day going 2-4 with an RBI. The Blue Jays got 8 hits and perfected the small ball game.
The Blue Jays will play next weekend away against Eureka College on April 29th. The start time for the game is 1 and game 2 follows.
