Blue Jays Win Season Opener 14-2 Over Edgewood

Jackson, MS 2/24/2023- The Westminster College baseball team started their down in Jackson, Mississippi as they are taking part in the Millsaps Baseball Classic. They started their season Friday evening against Edgewood College from Madison, Wisconsin. The Eagles would take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Blue Jays would tie the game 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning. Then the offense would explode for twelve more runs and propelled the Blue Jays to the 14-2 win to start the season.

Junior pitcher Bode Gebbink (St, Joseph, Il. / St. Joeseph-Ogden) started on the bump for the Blue Jays. The Eagles would get to him early to start the game with their leadoff hitter getting things started with a single up the middle. He would then steal a second. The next batter would hit a single up the middle as well and score the runner from second. Then the Eagles would hit a double to right center field and score the runner from first to take a 2-0 lead and no outs in the inning. Gebbink would settle in to retire the next three batters and got out of the inning. He would pitch six innings, striking out five batters, and walking one. He would give up five hits and two runs as he picked up his first win of the season.

A lot of Blue Jays got it done at the plate with Matt Lukins (Clark, Mo / Rock Bridge) leading the way going five for five from the dish, scoring four runs, and also getting an RBI. Steven Diaz (Highland, Il. / Highland) got off to a hot start to his senior year, we would go three for five with a walk, a double, and a triple, driving in two runs. Payton Whitehead (Belleville, Il. / Belleville West) went two for four with two walks. He would score two runs and had two RBIs.

The Blue Jays will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, February 25th as they take on the hosts Millsaps College at 1:00 PM and Edgewood again at 4:00 PM.
