Fulton, Mo 4/7/2023- The Westminster Blue Jays baseball team was back in action after the loss on Tuesday. They played Fontbonne Griffins in a doubleheader. The Griffins beat the Blue Jays 9-5 in game 1. The Blue Jays won game 2 7-4.
Game 1- Fontbonne University: Box Score
The Blue Jays offensively got ahead early in the game making the Griffins fight from behind. The Blue Jays had two people on base when Payton Whitehead(Belleville, Il. / Belleville West
) came up to bat. Whitehead hit a base hit single to right field to score Steven Diaz(Highland,Il./ Highland) off third base. Later on in the inning Coltin Green (St. Anthony,Mo / St. Elizabeth) hit a ground ball to score Troy Romero (Trophy Club, TX / Byron Nelson) to get the Blue Jays a 2-1 lead early. Diaz had a game going 2-4 with 2 RBIs; He hit a sacrifice fly to left to score a run and he homered to center field in the 7th. Skyler Bushey also had a home run today to right field ending the game going 1-3 with an RBI and a walk. Starting pitcher for the Blue Jays was Derek Archer(St. Charles, Mo/ Francis Howell North). Archer pitched 5 innings; he gave up 4 hits, 4 walks and got 5 strikeouts. In relief for Archer was Jake Waeltermann(Barnhart, Mo / Seckman), Matt Trout(Lee Summit, Mo / Blue Springs South) and Brooks Chandler(De Land, Fl / De Land). Combined they went 4 innings striking out 5 batters and only gave up 4 hits.
Game 2 - Fontbonne University: Box Score
The Blue Jays offense came alive in game two getting 12 hits and scored 7 runs. Leading the Blue Jays is Matt Lukins (Clark, Mo / Rock Bridge). Lukins went 1-3 with 2 RBIs scoring a run as well as getting HBP. Bushey went 2-4 with two RBIs and hit his 8th homerun. Diaz went 3-5 with 3 RBIs. Defensively for the Blue Jays Bode Gebbink(st. Joseph Il. / St. Joseph-Ogden) got the start for the Blue Jays. Gebbink went 7 innings with 104 pitches giving up 7 hits and got 6 strikeouts. Gebbink also got a milestone today and reached his 100th career strikeout as a Blue Jays. In relief for Gebbink was Hayden Sanborn(Arnold, Mo/ St. John Vianney). Sanborn went 2 innings facing 7 batters and got 2 strikeouts. Sanborn would also record his first save of the season.
The Blue Jays are back in action tomorrow at noon to finish the series against the Griffins.
