Westminster Sweeps Blackburn

Fulton, MO 3/28/2023- The Westminster College baseball team hosted the Blackburn College Beavers in a doubleheader on Tuesday. This was rescheduled from their last week after the games were pushed due to weather. The Blue Jays would win game one, 11-1, and win game two, 12-2 to go 3-0 in the SLIAC. They improve to 11-6 on the season and are winners of six straight games.

Game One: Box Score

The Jays started Trent Morrow ( Russellville, Mo. / Russellville) in game one who was making his fifth appearance and fourth start of the season. He would go seven innings, giving up one run on one hit. He would strike out eight batters and walk one. With the victory, he improved his record to 2-1.

Westminster would strike early scoring one run in the first and exploding for five runs in the second inning. They would tack on two more runs in the fifth and score one run in the sixth, seventh, and eighth inning.

Steven Diaz (Highland, Il. / Highland) got the day started with a leadoff single and would then advance to second on a wild pitch. Jason Pesold (Arnold, MO / St. Pius X) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Diaz up to third base. Skyler Bushey (Saint Albans, Vt / Bellows Free Academy) would bring him in on a sacrifice fly. 

The switch-hitting Diaz would hit two home runs in the game. He would hit one batting left-handed and another batting right-handed. He would go three for five in the game with four runs scored and two RBIs, leading the Jays to an 11-1 win in game one.

Game Two: Box Score  

Senior pitcher Jake Waeltermann (Barnhart, MO / Seckman) got the call in game two, he pitched five innings, giving up one run on eight hits, and stuck out four batters. Corbin Harrison (Eldon, Mo / Eldon) came in and pitched an inning, giving one run on one hit, walking two, and striking out one batter. Brian Henke (Silex, MO / Silex) would come in for an inning of work in the seventh inning. The lefty would give up one hit and record one strikeout. Sam Owen (Katy, Tx. / Cinco Ranch) came in to finish the game in the eighth.

The Jays did the most damage in the bottom of the second inning where they scored six runs. Quin Adelson (Louisville, KY / North Oldham) drew a one-out walk. Coltin Green (St. Anthony, Mo. / St. Elizabeth) singled to right field to put runners on first and second. Spencer Keiser (Old Monroe, Mo / Winfield) would get hit by a pitch to load the bases for Austin Mayton (Wentzville, Mo. / Fort Zumwalt North). Mayton delivered an RBI single to right field to score Adelson and keep the bases loaded. After a strikeout, Diaz stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. He would scorch a ball to the left field fence to clear the bases, scoring all three runners on a double. Troy Romero (Trophy Club, TX / Byron Nelson) hit a single to bring in Diaz. Romero would move up to third on an error by the Beavers' right fielder. He would then score on a wild pitch to make it 6-0 Westminster.

They would score two more runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, two in the sixth, and finally, one in the eighth inning to win the game 12-2 after eight innings.

Bushey continued to swing the hot bat, going three for five with a home run, his fourth in four games and his fifth of the season. He would drive in two runs and score throw himself. Green would also have three hits in the game with two RBIs and two runs scored. Diaz would have a team-high four RBIs.

The Blue Jays will be back in action this weekend when they take on Greenville University for a three-game series at Greenville. There is rain in the forecast so be sure to check the athletics website and the Blue Jay athletics social media for updates on any schedule changes.
