Memphis, Tn. – The Westminster College Blue Jays softball team put the finishing touches on a double header sweep with two runs in the top of the eighth inning of game two on Friday. The Blue Jays would prevail 7-5 in extra innings.
The Blue Jays got things started in the fourth inning trailing 1-0, with one out in the inning and the bases empty senior Katie Price would rip a solo home run to tie the score 1-1.
In the fifth inning the Blue Jays would take the lead. Emily Esquivel singled to lead off the inning, Laney Rosson would then single on a bunt attempt that she beat out. Now it was first and second with nobody out and then Brooke Laidley reached on an error by the pitcher to load the bases. Katie Price would then double to left field to score Esquivel but Rosson was thrown out at the plate for the first out. The Blue Jays had the lead 2-1. They would add a couple more runs on a couple errors and a Erin Carr RBI single. When the dust cleared The Blue Jays were ahead 5-1.
The Blue Jays cruised towards the end of the game but in the bottom of the seventh inning Rhodes College would rally for four runs to tie the game and force the game into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth inning with a runner placed on second to begin the inning Brooklyn Bledsoe came through with an RBI single and would eventually advance to third on the throw home. The next batter Esquivel would manage to lift a fly ball to drive home Bledsoe with the sacrifice fly. The score stood at 7-5 heading into the bottom of the inning where pitcher Erin Carr (1-2) would complete her day by recording a three up three down inning to preserve the win. The complete game victory was the first career win for Carr.
Head Coach Sara Stafford had this to say about the sweep, "It is awesome to coach a team that loves to play together. It took almost every single player on the team to get these wins today. Erin Carr got her first collegiate career win on the mound. Kayleigh Fike and Erin Carr got their first career hits. Mackenzie Myers was 5 for 8 with a walk and home run." She added, "Rhodes is very good competition. They are a tough team to beat. KP and Erin stepped up in a major way on the mound today. They proved today that they can handle tough situations with disciplined batters at the plate. I am very excited to watch them and the rest of the team this season!"
The win evened the Blue Jays record at 4-4.
