Blue Jay Offense Shows Out In Sweep Of Eureka

Fulton, Mo., April 3, 2021 – The Blue Jays softball team came into Saturdays showdown with the Eureka College Red Devils at Blue Jay field looking to stay undefeated in SLIAC play.  Fortunately for them they brought the big bats and swept the Red Devils 11-2 in 6 innings in game one and 10-2 in 5 innings in game two.

Game One BOXSCORE

Eureka would strike first in the top of the first inning plating one run.  The Blue Jays would come alive in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Mackenzie Myers would walk to lead off the inning. After Eva Gannon lined out to shortstop Abbey Jaspering would single to left field moving Myers to second. Kasey Ginder would follow with an RBI single to right field tying the game at 1-1 Brooklyn Bledsoe would walk to load the bases. Emily Esquivel would drive in a run when she reached on an error shortstop leaving the bases loaded.  Laney Rosson would keep the line moving when she hit a two RBI single to left field. Brooke Laidley would single to left field to load the bases again.  Katie Price would single to drive in a run. Myers who started the inning hit a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in another run and just like that the Blue Jays led 6-1 after ten batters came to the plate in the inning.

The Red Devils would add a run in the top of the 3rd to make it 6-2.  The Blue Jays would get that run back when Jaspering walked and went to third on a Ginder single.  Esquivel would drive her home with a single to left field to make it 7-2. In the bottom of the 5th inning the Jays would score on a wild pitch and a Ginder RBI ground out to take the score to 9-2.

The Blue Jays would end the game in the bottom of the 6th when with one on and two outs Mackenzie Myers would step to the plate and walk it off with a two-run home run. Final score 11-2.

Rosson, Jaspering and Ginder each had two hits to lead the Blue Jay attack. Myers had three RBI's. Ginder, Esquivel and Rosson each drove in two runs.

Price (6-3) pitched all 6 innings giving up 2 runs on 5 hits walking 1 and striking out 4 in getting the win.

Game Two BOXSCORE

Game two went almost exactly like the first game when Eureka would score first and the bottom of the 2nd inning was the big inning for the Blue Jays.

With Eureka leading 2-1 heading into the bottom of the 2nd inning Bledsoe would drive in a run with an RBI single to center. Esquivel would drive in a run when she would reach on a fielders choice to make it 3-2 in favor of Westminster.  The big hit of the inning would come a few batters later when Brooke Laidley would launch a three-run home run over the wall to give the Blue Jays a 6-2 lead.

The Jays would add to their lead in the 4th inning when Myers would hit an RBI Double to make it 7-2 and then Eva Gannon would hit a two run single to center field to put the Jays up 9-2.

In the 5th inning three of the first four batters would reach base. With the bases loaded and one out Myers stepped to the plate and was hit by a pitch to walk it off for the second game in a row 10-2 for the Blue Jays.

Laidley led the Blue Jay hitters going 3-3 with 4 RBI's. Bledsoe, Price and Myers each collected two hits.

Erin Carr (3-6) pitched all five innings giving up 2 runs only one of which was earned on 5 hits. She walked 2 and struck out none in earning the win.
