St. Louis, Mo., March 21, 2021 – The Blue Jay Softball team travelled to St. Louis to take on the Washington University Bears. The road double header would be a rematch of last weeks games between the two teams in Fulton. This time out the Bears were victorious in both games, 6-1 in game one and 11-4 in game two.
Game 1 BOXSCORE
The Blue Jays would jump out on top early by literally stealing a run in the second inning. Katie Price would walk to lead off the inning and then Mackenzie Myers would double, moving Price over to third. After a strikeout recorded the first out, the Blue Jays hitter, Brooklyn Bledsoe, would ground a ball back to the pitcher who threw out Price at home plate. Myers advanced to third on the play. Bledsoe would then steal second base and Myers would come home on the throw to second giving the Blue Jays an early 1-0 lead.
The Bears would respond with two runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning to take a 2-1 lead they would not give up. They added a single run in the 5th inning and then tack on 3 more runs in the 6th to secure the game one victory.
The Blue Jays would record four hits in the game as Myers, Eva Gannon, Maddie Marrero and Laney Rosson all reached by base hit.
Katie Price (4-2) went the distance for the Blue Jays giving up six runs on 12 hits. She struck out three and walked two.
The loss dropped the Blue Jays record to 5-6.
Game 2 BOXSCORE
The second game would once again get off to a good start for the Blue Jays. Brooke Laidley would double in the first inning and Katie Price would single her home for a 1-0 lead. The Jays would strike again in the top of the second. Erin Carr and Brooklyn Bledsoe would single in back to back at bats with one out. Laney Rosson would then drive in the second run of the game with a single that also advanced Bledsoe to third. Bledsoe would com home to score on a Emily Esquivel sacrifice fly to left field to make the score 3-0 Blue Jays.
The wheels would fall off in the bottom of the second as the Bears would score 6 runs on 5 hits to take a 6-3 lead. They would add another run in the third inning on an RBI double before the Jays could respond.
In the second Laney Rosson would double and then come home on an Esquivel RBI single cutting the Bears lead to 7-4. It was the closest the Blue Jays would get the rest of the way as the Bears would add runs in the 5th and 6th innings to post the win 11-4.
The Blue Jay offense pounded out ten hits in game two. Rosson and Price led the attack with two hits apiece.
Carr (1-5) would go 6 innings giving up 11 runs on 15 hits. She would strikeout 2 and walked two.
The Blue Jays are back in action on Thursday when they travel to Greenville University for a pair of games. The games will both be counted as non-conference games. The games are scheduled for 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. first pitches.
