Price Pitches, Myers Hits, Blue Jays Roll 6-1

Memphis, Tn. -  The Westminster College Blue Jays softball team took the field on Friday with something to prove.  A week ago the Jays had played the Rhodes College Lynx in a single game down in Mississippi.  The Blue Jays competed but ultimately fell 6-4 in that game. Friday gave them a chance to prove they could flip the script on the Lynx.  A weeks worth of good weather and practice saw the Blue Jays do just that in a 6-1 win on the Lynx home field.

The story of the first game of the double header was pitching and defense for the Blue Jays. Senior Katie Price (2-1) pitched a complete game giving up one run in the first inning and then shutting the Lynx down after that.  She allowed just 5 hits while striking out five and walking one.  The Blue Jay defense held up their end for Price by playing errorless softball while their opponents committed four errors.

Mackenzie Myers had a day at the plate.  The senior outfielder went 3-4 with a home run, two runs scored and an RBI to lead the Jays.  Brooke Laidley joined Meyers with a multi-hit game of her own going 2-4 with a run scored.

Trailing 1-0 entering the fifth inning the Blue Jays would use two hits and two Lynx errors to take the lead 2-1.  Myers led off the inning with a single and after a Lynx error put her on third Emily Esquivel would come through with an RBI single. Later the Jays would add another run after Laney Rosson walked to load the bases and another Lynx error on ground ball to third allowed Torie Thurston to score to give the Blue Jays a lead they would not give up.

The Blue Jays would add to their lead in the sixth when Myers hit her second home run of the season. In the seventh Westminster would add three more insurance runs in the top half of the inning and Price would slam the door shut in the bottom half to preserve the win.  The Blue Jays improve to 2-3 on the young season heading into game two of the double header.
