Fulton, Mo. – The Blue Jay women's soccer team tied the Hendrix Warriors 3-3 in 110 minutes of action on Friday night. Westminster's record now stands at 0-4-1.
The Warriors went ahead early, scoring a goal less than three minutes into the match. The Blue Jays tied the score at 1 in the 17th minute off a goal by Shannon Kauffman (Kansas City, Mo. / Park Hill). The goal was Kauffman's first career goal.
27 minutes into the first period Westminster was awarded a penalty kick following a Hendrix foul. The Blue Jays sent sophomore Kate Ponder (Ashland, Mo. / Southern Boone) to take the kick. With the score tied at 1-1 Ponder delivered a strike past the Hendrix keeper to put her team up 2-1. The Blue Jays went into halftime ahead 2-1 despite being outshot 10-4 by Hendrix.
Ponder scored her second goal of the game in the 60th minute following a corner kick. Ponder took the corner for Westminster and made a short pass to Emily Siegel (Liberty, Mo. / Liberty), who quickly passed back to Ponder for a shot. Ponder was able to kick the ball over the Hendrix goalie and into the back of the net to put the Blue Jays up 3-1.
Hendrix quickly responded with a goal of their own to bring the score to 3-2. After making a switch at goalie the Warriors found momentum and scored the game-tying goal in the 79th minute. With the score tied at 3-3 the teams headed into overtime.
Each team registered a shot in the first overtime period. Westminster threatened when Natalie Schulte (Linn Creek, Mo. / Camdenton) ran down a pass and fired a shot on net that was saved by the Hendrix goalie. The first overtime period ended with the contest unresolved.
In the second overtime period Hendrix was able to put pressure on the Blue Jays by drawing a pair of corner kicks. However, Westminster goalie Sarah Cradick (Maryland Heights, Mo. / Pattonville) was able to snag the ball out of the air both times to neutralize the Warrior threat. After 110 minutes the game ended in a tie.
Cradick played all 110 minutes in goal and recorded 10 saves. This is the second game in which Cradick has posted double-digit save numbers on the season.
The Blue Jays play again on Sunday at 3 p.m. at home against Nebraska Wesleyan.
