Blue Jays Drop Season Opener Against Simpson

Fulton, Mo. – The Westminster women's soccer team was defeated by Simpson College 1-0 in their first match of the season. The Blue Jays fall to 0-1 on the season.

"Simpson was a good match up for us and it was a tough battle on both sides. Today Simpson just found the back of the net," said Westminster Head Coach Wendy Sanchez.

Simpson got off to an early lead off a goal in the 16th minute. This goal would go on to be the only one of the match as both team's defenses held strong for the remainder of the contest.

After allowing the early goal Westminster senior goalie Sarah Cradick (Maryland Heights, Mo. / Pattonville) responded by saving the next two shots she faced and finished the half with a pair of saves. Cradick added four additional saves in the second half and finished the game with six saves on seven shots.

Junior forward Natalie Schulte (Linn Creek, Mo. / Camdenton) led the Westminster offense with four of the team's nine shots. Senior midfielder Madison Ekern (Chicago, Ill. / Whitney Young) recorded a pair of shots.

"Although we didn't get the result we wanted I'm proud that our team continues to play their hearts out. We will learn and grow," said Sanchez.

The Blue Jays return to action Sunday when they travel to Decatur, Ill., to face Millikin University. The match is set to begin at 12 PM.
