Blue Jays Shut Out Fontbonne in Semifinals, Head to SLIAC Championship

The Westminster men's soccer team shut out Fontbonne University 5-0 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Tournament. The semifinal win lands the Westminster Blue Jays back in the SLIAC Championship game for the third consecutive year. 

The 5-0 shutout, the Blue Jays' seventh consecutive shutout win and 11th shutout on the season, brings the team to a 16-2 overall record. 

Westminster's sophomore Daniel Barone scored the first goal of the game off a free kick in the 24th minute. The Blue Jays scored again in the 41st minute with a cross by Barone to senior Kyle Collins who headed the ball into the upper left corner of the goal. The Blue Jays held the 2-0 lead going into halftime, holding Fontbonne to just two shots in the period.

Junior Drew Cook started the scoring in the second half for the Blue Jays off assists by juniors Peter Plakorus and Tripp Sheehan in the 58th minute. Junior Josh Jaycox scored the fourth goal after dribbling down midfield and taking a shot that landed in the goal.

Sophomore Blake Hausman scored the fifth and final goal of the game in the 87th minute. Freshman Patrick Bromstedt and Plakorus assisted the goal.

The Blue Jays outshot Fontbonne 32-4 with 19 shots-on-goal. The Blue Jay defense held Fontbonne to just three shots-on-goal, and freshman keeper Tanner Moesch stopped all three, recording his second collegiate shutout win in goal. 

The Blue Jays now move on to the SLIAC Championship game, hosting #3 Webster on Friday, November 6, at 7:00 pm at Fulton High School. Webster defeated Greenville in their semifinal game, 4-2. The Blue Jays look to win their third consecutive SLIAC Tournament, earning the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
