Sherman's Goal Lifts Blue Jays Over Central In Overtime

Westminster's junior Eli Sherman scored two goals in Wednesday's 3-2 overtime win over Central College (Iowa), including the game-winning goal in overtime. The Blue Jays extend their winning streak to four games, bringing them to 4-1 on the season and 2-0 on their home turf.

Sherman scored the first goal of the game with a header off junior Tripp Sheehan's throw-in in the 12th minute. The game remained scoreless throughout the rest of the first half, sending the game into halftime with the Blue Jays leading 1-0.

In the 69th minute, Central's Miguel Pina put the ball past Westminster's goalkeeper Raul Belman to tie the game. After multiple shots on goal by Central in the 85th minute, Pina scored when the ball reflected off Belman and rolled into the net.

The Blue Jays quickly tied the game up again when Sheehan crossed the ball up to junior Drew Cook less than 20 seconds later who placed the ball past Central's keeper.

The two teams were unable to score in the remaining five minutes of play, sending the game into overtime.

The Blue Jays held possession of the game in overtime with three shots taken, but the Central defense was able to stop the shots. In the 97th minute, Sherman took a shot from 10 yards out into the middle left side of the goal, ending the game with a 3-2 win.

Belman (4-1) is credited with the overtime win in goal. He grabbed six saves in goal and allowed just two goals.

The Blue Jays continue their five game home stretch on Saturday, September 19, with a home game versus Simpson College. The game will be held at Columbia College with the first touch at 12:30 p.m.
