Blue Jays Sweep Red Devils In Conference Home Opener

Fulton, Mo 4/8/2023- The Westminster College softball team hosted the Eureka College Red Devils for a Saturday doubleheader at Blue Jay Field. The Jays would win game won 5-2 and won game two, 4-1 to pick up their first wins of the season. The Jays improve to 2-22 on the season and 2-1 in the SLIAC. The Red Devils fall to 5-15-1 on the season and 2-2 in the conference.

Game One: Box Score

Haley Miller (O'Fallon, MO / Liberty) started in game one and pitched a complete game. She went the full seven innings, giving up 2 runs on 6 hits. She would strike out 6 batters and walk 2 on the way to her first win on the season.

The Blue Jays would strike first scoring in the bottom of the 2nd inning when Raegen Dickinson (Ozark, MO / Ozark) led off the inning with a base hit to third base. Kennedy Grimsley (Bowling Green, MO / Bowling Green) would come in the pinch run for Dickinson. Payton Dudenhoeffer (Jefferson City, MO / Helias Catholic) would single to center field to put runners on first and second. Kelsey Logan (Fulton, Mo / South Callaway) hit into a fielder's choice to reach first and moved Dudenhoeffer up to second base. They threw Grimsley out at third on the force out. Felicity Kirby (Camdenton, MO / Camdenton) would single to load the bases. Maddie Marrero (Columbia, Mo. / Rock Bridge) stepped to the plate with two outs in the inning and the bases loaded. She would hit a single to score Dudenhoeffer and give the Blue Jays an early 1-0 lead.

Westminster would score three more runs in the bottom of the third and one more in the bottom of the fifth to win the game 5-2.

Game Two: Box Score

The Blue Jays would start game two with Dudenhoeffer on the mound. She would retire the Red Devils in order in the top of the first inning. Marrero started the bottom half of the frame with a leadoff walk. Emily Esquivel (San Diego, Ca. / Eastlake) hit a single to put runners on first and second. With that base hit, she recorded the 100th hit of her career! Eva Gannon (Wentzville, Mo. / Holt) would also single to load the bases. Dickinson reached on a fielder's choice and scored Marrero; Esquivel would be out at third on the force out.

Westminster would score in the bottom of the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. Dickinson would cap the game off with a bang hitting a deep two-run home run to left field to give the Jays a 4-1 victory.

Dudenhoeffer pitched the full seven innings, giving up one run on five hits, she would walk six batters and one strikeout.

The Blue Jays will be back in action on Wednesday, April 12th when they host Webster University in a home doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
