11/10/24 Fulton, MO - The Westminster College Blue Jays women's basketball team tipped off their season with two challenging matchups in Waverly, IA, facing off against two tough opponents. Despite putting up strong performances, Westminster fell short in both games, losing to #2-ranked Wartburg College and Bethel University (Minn.).
Game 1 vs. Warburg College
In their season opener on November 8, the Blue Jays battled against the highly ranked Wartburg College Knights. Westminster kept pace in the first half, leading the second quarter with 29-27. However, Wartburg surged in the third and fourth quarters, outscoring the Blue Jays to secure a 60-46 victory.
Senior guard Annette Ramirez stood out with an extraordinary offensive display, scoring 35 of Westminster's 46 points. She shot a remarkable 13-18 from the field, including 4-5 from beyond the arc, and was perfect from the free-throw line. Ramirez also contributed five rebounds, two steals, and two blocks, showing her versatility on both ends of the floor. Westminster's defense showed grit, with Gizelle Carreto leading in rebounds, pulling down 10 boards while adding two steals.
Game 2 vs. Bethel University (Minn.)
The following day, Westminster took on Bethel University, seeking redemption. The Blue Jays showed improved offensive rhythm, especially in the second half, outscoring Bethel in the third quarter. Still, Bethel's strong start and consistency secured them a 79-69 win over Westminster.
Avylina Powell-Qualo led the charge for Westminster with a well-rounded game, scoring 21 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Ramirez again delivered a strong performance, adding 27 points, including three three-pointers, and making 8-9 free throws. Gizelle Carreto showed her abilities with five assists and chipped in six points, proving valuable on both ends of the court.
The Blue Jays may have opened their season with two losses, but these games have displayed the individual talents of players like Ramirez and Powell-Qualo. With their dynamic scoring potential and relentless defense, Westminster looks to build on these experiences as they continue through their season. The Blue Jays will be back in action on Friday, November 15th when they travel to Monmouth, Illinois for the weekend to compete in the Monmouth Tip-Off Classic.
